Working with animals I have some very interesting friends and this one is very special.
Mary is a 50 year old plus giant Mery river turtle. This species are the second most endangered turtle in Australia and in the top 25 in the world. In the 60s and 70s their population was decimated by the pet trade.
Mary was most probably taken as a pet years ago and ended up being given to Melbourne Aquarium where she lived for most of her life. I now have the privilege of caring for her and hope to find a breading partner for her in the coming season.
